Business insurance

What is the best insurance for a small business?

There is no single best policy; most start with general liability.

What does a business owners policy cover?

Usually general liability, property and business interruption, bundled.

More in business insurance
What factors affect business insurance premiums?

The work, payroll, revenue, claims history, limits and location.

More in what business insurance costs
What does general liability insurance not cover?

Your own property, injuries to your own employees, professional mistakes, your vehicles and harm you cause on purpose. Most of those gaps have their own policy: property coverage, workers compensation, professional liability and commercial auto.

More in what general liability does not cover
Does general liability cover my own employees if they get hurt?

No. Injuries to your own employees are a workers compensation matter, bought as its own policy, and Arizona law brings almost every employer with regular employees under it.

Life insurance

What exactly is a term life insurance?

Coverage for a set number of years that ends unless renewed or converted.

More in term life insurance
What does a term life policy cost each month?

It depends on age, health, the amount and the term.

What is key person life insurance?

Life insurance a business owns on someone it depends on. The business pays the premiums and is paid if that person dies.

How much life insurance do I need?

A common way to work it out: add the income the people who depend on you would need, for the years they would need it, plus debts such as a mortgage, then subtract your savings and any coverage you already have.

What is indexed universal life insurance?

Permanent life insurance whose cash value is credited with interest linked to a market index, within a cap and a floor, after policy charges. It is life insurance, not an investment.

Home and auto insurance

What is the difference between liability and full coverage?

Full coverage usually adds comprehensive and collision for your own car.

Can I refuse renters insurance?

Not if your lease requires it; otherwise it is your choice.

What car insurance does Arizona require?

Liability of at least $25,000 for one person’s injuries, $50,000 for all injuries in one accident and $15,000 for damage to other people’s property, for policies issued or renewed since July 1, 2020. Damage above your limits can fall to you.

Does homeowners insurance cover flood?

No. A standard homeowners policy does not pay for flood or earthquake damage; coverage for either is bought separately, which is worth knowing before monsoon season.

More in home and auto insurance
Is it worth bundling home and auto?

Often worth asking about: one insurer writing both may offer a multi-policy discount. Compare the bundle on the same coverage as two separate policies.

Choosing an agent

How do I check that an insurance agent is licensed in Arizona?

Search the name or license number on the state licensee lookup.

More in how to choose an agent
Whose side is an insurance agent on?

Ask how the agent is paid and which insurers they can offer.

More in how to choose an agent
Should I pick an agent who works for one insurer or several?

Either can serve you well. What matters is knowing which it is, so ask which insurers the agent can offer and you will know what you are really comparing.

Before you ask me

A few things make a first question go faster. None of it is required.

Have these handy

  • Your declarations page, if you have a policy now
  • What you want covered: the business, the car or home, or your life
  • Your question, in a sentence or two

Leave out policy numbers, dates of birth and health details. I don't need them for a first question.

Two more I hear a lot

See every kind of insurance I can help with.

What should I avoid saying to my insurance company?

Never guess, speculate about fault or say something you are unsure of. Give the facts you know and say when you do not know. Everything on an application or a claim must be true, because a misstatement can void your coverage.

What are the main types of insurance?

For most people and businesses: auto, home or renters, life, health, disability, liability and, for businesses, commercial property, workers compensation and professional liability. My license covers Property, Casualty and Life.
